Notes on Family Name Changes, etc.


Old families and where they've gone:

Aceraceae --> now included in Sapindaceae

Adiantaceae --> included in Pteridaceae

Adoxaceae --> now includes some actinomorphic genera formerly included in Caprifoliaceae, e.g. Sambucus and Viburnum.

Agavaceae --> a subfamily within Asparagaceae.

Alliaceae --> subfamily Allioideae in Amaryllidaceae.

Araliaceae --> now included in Apiaceae.

Asclepiadaceae --> now included in Apocynaceae.

Athyriaceae --> included in Dryopteridaceae

Caesalpinaceae --> included in Fabaceae

Capparaceae --> often included in Brassicaceae, but I'm leaving it separate.

Caprifoliaceae --> some genera formerly in Caprifoliaceae are now in Adoxaceae; genera formerly in Dipsacaceae and Valerianaceae are now in Caprifoliaceae

Compositae --> now Asteraceae

Cruciferae --> now Brassicaceae

Cuscutaceae --> included in Convolvulaceae

Dipsacaceae --> now included in Caprifoliaceae

Fumariaceae --> now included in Papaveraceae

Gramineae --> now Poaceae

Guttiferae --> now Clusiaceae

Hippocastanaceae --> now included in Sapindaceae

Hydrophyllaceae --> now included within Boraginaceae

Leguminosae --> now Fabaceae

Liliaceae --> genera in the previous very broad circumscription of Liliaceae has been separated out into Amaryllidaceae, Asparagaceae, Liliaceae, Melanthiaceae, and perhaps others that do not occur to me at the moment.

Mimosaceae --> included in Fabaceae

Polypodiaceae --> older works use this family in a very broad sense, including members of what are now Aspleniaceae, Pteridaceae, Dryopteridaceae, etc.

Ruscaceae --> subfamily Nolinoideae in Asparagaceae.

Scrophulariaceae --> most genera previously in Scrophulariaceae are now in Plantaginaceae, Orobanchaceae, or Phrymaceae.

Umbelliferae --> now Apiaceae

Valerianaceae --> now included in Caprifoliaceae

Woodsiaceae --> included in Dryopteridaceae
